Hidden deep beneath the City Chambers on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile you’ll find a warren of secrets, where real people used to live in the 17th to 19th centuries. This is Real Mary King’s Close, a network of underground streets and spaces where people used to live and where the busy heart of Edinburgh used to lie, with market traders, bustling shoppers and more.
When you visit Real Mary King’s Close you’ll enjoy a costumed character your guide based upon the life story of a former resident of the area and you’ll get the chance to explore the underground site with your tour group, alongside hearing the story of your guide. Tours are organised every fifteen minutes from 10am and as it’s a hugely popular attraction it’s a good idea to book in advance. Tales of ghosts, ghastly murders, plague victims and more, you’ll hear the real underground history of Edinburgh’s Old Town when you visit Real Mary King’s Close.
