Founded back in 2004, Edinburgh Art Festival is Scotland's largest celebration of visual art and related disciplines and attracted nearly 300,000 visitors in 2014. The festival is an opportunity for the exceptional institutions and individual artists of Edinburgh to celebrate and show off their finery. The festival brings together the city's fantastic galleries, museums and artist-run spaces and workshops and allows the public to enjoy them. The festival also includes the commission of new pieces of public art and a vibrant programme of special events every year.
The programme allows the galleries and institutions of the city to shine but it also lets individual artists promote themselves and produce their own shows and exhibitions to be enjoyed throughout the festival. The programme champions both the work of Scottish and international artists. The majority of the festival is free to attend although there are certain exhibitions and shows which charge but these are clearly advertised to minimise disappointment.
