Edinburgh's City Guide

Edinburgh Festivals' Cavalcade

The Edinburgh Festivals' Cavalcade was a hugely popular and entertaining event which marked the beginning of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for over 30 years. First taking place in 1976 the Cavalcade ran until 2011 when it was replaced by the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival to initiate and launch the Festival Carnival in the city.

The Festival Cavalcade annually travelled through the streets of the city and took place at the beginning of August. Originally in ran through Princes Street in the city centre, with many floats and marching bands travelling together in procession to launch festival season in the city. In 2009 and 2010 The Cavalcade changed route and travelled through Holyrood Park.

The Cavalcade traditionally began with motorised parade floats, vintage motorcycles and collector's cars as well as many other vehicles, all decorated and building the excitement for the city's festival season. The Cavalcade is now sorely missed but very well remembered by many who saw it.
